How did the week treat you? Are you ready for the weekend? Ready for some football maybe? Or a fall festival?
Our fall weather is on a mini break while summer returns just to say, "You're going to miss me when I'm gone!" So, I'm going to do my best to be nice and appreciate those warm temps in the hopes that summer will make frequent visits this winter. That's probably not going to happen, but it never hurts to be nice, now does it?
However, it is October, so despite the summertime temps, I'm eager to continue our discussions on fall topics. I can't think of October without thinking of Halloween, so lets talk favorite scary movies and books. I've always enjoyed both. My hubby and I used to see horror flicks the first week they came out at the theater. We don't do that anymore though. Not only are we busier than we used to be, the gore in the new movies just doesn't appeal to us. However, when we see some of our favorites on television, it's popcorn and cuddling time and two hours of frightmares!

Halloween (Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance. We've seen them all, but the first one is the best)
Dracula (I'm fond of the Gary Oldman and Frank Langella. Hubby only likes the Bella Lugosi version)
The Wolfman (We both prefer the original with Lon Chaney, Jr.)
Dracula Meets the Wolfman (Abbott and Costello comedy. Hilarious!)

I'm sure there are many I left out, but these are the ones that come to mind. As far as books go, I used to read Stephen King all the time. Loved him! My favorite is Bag of Bones. LOL Probably because it has a love story and a ghost too. Also loved Bram Stoker's Dracula. Several years ago, I found an original copy of it at a used book store--what a deal!
I know some of you don't care for scary movies and don't get into Halloween, but is there a movie or book that you feel lends itself to reading during the fall? Have you seen the movie October Skies? Great movie and book!

I don't do scary movies and you can't make me :) LOL! I don't read really scary books either. Although authors like you and Karen Rose create these really creepy villains so maybe I should re-read all those during October!

Yesterday was a horrible day for me. Spent it fighting with Dell over the crash of my 2 month old hard drive (which has already been replaced once). They are not very customer friendly.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to a long weekend!! Very little actual plans, which is unusual. With the holiday, there is no soccer game. My daughter did get picked for another modeling gig at Macy's, so she has to go on Monday morning for a fitting, but that's about it.
I'm not big into the scary stuff anymore. When I was still in school, I read alot of Stephen King. I get too scared at movies now. I remember jumping out of my skin with "The Sixth Sense".
Two movies scared me spitless -- the original Halloween that you mentioned, and Salem's Lot -- the vampires in that one were just toooo creepy!! A newer movie that I thought was really creepy is the Grudge... When I was a teenager I read "In Cold Blood" and because it was a true story, it scared me silly! I don't like to read or watch scary stories that could actually be real - life is scary enough as it is! Now I just like to watch old B&W movies and read romance books! It is a good escape! Which is what I plan on doing this weekend!

ReplyDeleteI have never really been into the blood and gore of the Halloween movies. Like the suspense movies best. And the surprise scare. I have to say one of the scariest movies I remember was when a group of us in highschool went to see Carrie. We were late and had to sit on the front row. When that hand came up, I am not sure who screamed the most, the guys or girls. I still remember that fondly. One other movie that I liked I saw on TV when I was preteen, 13 Ghosts. It was really good, all about a haunted house. And I too like just about all of Stephen Kings books. Also love serial killer books.

ReplyDeleteAnd another I didn't mention is Stephen King's Storm of the Century. Have you seen it? It's edge of your seat scary but also has an interesting moral lesson. I've seen it at least a dozen times and never fail to watch it when it's on. Love it!

My hubby doesn't really like the scary movies, but I remember watching Bram Stoker's Dracula, and love that movie. I haven't read the book though. A movie that scared me to deal when I was little was all the Return of the Living Dead movies. We (my son and I) watched one the other night and all I could do was laugh at how NOT scary that movie was, but I had a hard time with that one. I haven't ever read a scary book before, so I couldn't recommend a book.
ReplyDeleteThere are 2 movies that we watch in October not matter how old my son gets (he is now 13). We watch Scooby Doo's Haunted Halloween and The Adam's Family. Just kind of our little tradition.

ReplyDeleteOther than Freddy and Jason and the boys I can't think of scary movies I've seen. I know I've seen Dracula, which was on your list, but that doesn't come to mind as a "scary" movie. LOL. Maybe my perseption is a bit warped. (Quit laughing RPs!)
Now, scary books: Stephen King...and I'm thinking of one that I just can't remember who wrote it. I read it when I was 13 and it was SO creepy: something about water filling your house and you turn into a giant cockroach type creature, so these creatures were taking over the town. My synopsis does not do the book justice at all, but it's stayed with me as *the* scariest book ever all these years. LOL. And of course there's Patricia Cornwell, Karen Rose who write some fasinating creepy bad guys.
I LOVE this time of year! Right now we're trying to guage if the Halloween decorations are too scary still for the 3 year old. I'm thinking they might be....

I have the original House on Haunted Hill. I love ANYTHING with Vincent Price - he was truly the best at the suspense/scary stuff. I really don't do a whole lot of gory-type scary - I like the ghostie stuff. :)

When I was a teenager "Fright Night" was my favorite. Now I don't get into the scary movies or books. I get enough scarey from some of my romantic suspence authors.
ReplyDeleteYes we saw it together. I remember you, me, Rita, Bill and Colin. I am sure there were others. I think Colin screamed the loudest. That movie was my first taste of Steven King and have loved him since. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is also one of my favorites.

ReplyDeleteFor me, there's scary gory & scary suspenseful. I'm not a fan of blood & gore for the sake of screaming. The first suspenseful movie I remember was Wait Until Dark with Audrey Hepburn. Another one that freaked me out was Rosemary's Baby. I still watch it when it's on though. The book that freaked me out was the Omen. I slept with the light on for 2 weeks after I read it. I watched the movie anyway LOL.
It's our Canadian Thanksgiving on Monday & I took today off for an extra long weekend. Once again I am thankful for you all & having a great place to park on Mondays.

ReplyDeleteThe Stephen King roach book I do not remember, but it sounds spooky. One of the many things I admire about King is his ability to make you feel you are part of the story, which when it's a horror movie/book, makes it all the more horrific!

I do like your movies and several from the other post but one of my favorite movies was the orginal "The Haunting" the old black and white version not the new one with Kathern Zeta in it. It took me a few days to get over that movie. I also like one of the movies in "A Trilogy of Terror" the one with Karen Black and the little wooden Afican Man. I could not put my feet on the floor for hours. As for books - Wellll most of Stephen King books but Connie and I could not go to sleep until we watch something funny if we read a chapter or two of "Pet Sematary" that book gave us both nightmares. I hope you have a great weekend tell your Mom "Roll Tide" for me.

ReplyDeleteI am having a horror month from the technology aspect. Nothing is working for me and i am super frustrated. I come from work to work from home and the wireless on my laptop is not working. I try to connect with the modem and its really slow because we live in an old house with these really thick walls and reception is horific. We don't have internet on the comouter at home because we moved it upstairs and we don't have internet yet. But my husband and I are so busy at work that we don't have time to organise things. Which is ridiculous since i really need internet at home too.
then there is my new blackberry with a defective battery and i have just switched service providers and have been unsuccessful at setting up my email accounts on it. My husband comes home late and is dead tired so is no help at all.
Unfortunately I am not only technologically challenged I have a technological black finger, as soon as i touch something it stops or freezes. I really need someone to come and arrange things for me and no one seems to be available - grrrr
Guess I must become more independent in these things as i have always left them in my husband's hands.

Regina, I'm a sucker for all Abbott and Costello movies. I get their silliness...more so than I ever understood the Stooges. However, the Dracula Meets Frankenstein in one of my all time favorites.

ReplyDeleteI don't really do scary movies or books. Its embarassing to say, the movie I remember that scared the me the most was Gremlins!! I don't even think it was meant to be a horror movie!! I saw that movie as a kid and when they said beware of things under your bed or bumps in the night...that was it! I was terrified!!!
To me that's the scariest thing...someone in your house and you don't know it...CREEPY!!!
I'm looking forward to next week's food discussion...I seem to cook the same things over and over so new ideas are always great!
Another very scary movie I remember is Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, with Kim Darby. The Trilogy of Terror/Karen Black movie was super scary!! I also remember a movie where little gremlins invade a home and end up dragging the women down a black hole in the fireplace-- Christy -- yes, the original Salem's Lot was what I was referring to - remakes are never ever as good as the original! This is a great thread!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to see that you love Stephen King's Silver Bullet. One of my favorite movies period. I do like scary movies but not movies made just for the gore factor. I too like the first Halloween movie, Storm of the Season, and Needful Things. The Grudge is scary, esp the original one made in Japan (yes, I actually own a movie with subtitles). One of the eeriest I've seen is "Dead Birds", which spooks me horribly. I should watch it this weekend... I do love Halloween (the holiday itself), all the fall things and the jack-o-lanterns and serious weirdness. But then, Edward Gorey is one of my favorite artists and I have his "Gashlycrumb Tinies" hanging in my living room framed with a tombstone-shaped mat. So I'm a lost case year round. :)

Yes it was Carrie. I know there were a bunch of us there, just can't remember who all. I think we went to a theater in Ensley and had problems finding it was why we were late. And I know those 2 were just good friends to us. Memory isn't what it use to be.
ReplyDeleteOh, another movie I forgot to mention was called: Don't Answer the Phone. I think it was made in the 70's. There's a remake that's pretty good but nothing like the original.

The first time I saw this movie, I was in training for my job in Bloomington, Illinois. I was staying in a condo with two other women and we started watching the movie late one night. When the scariest moment happened, it was hilarious how we reacted.
One roommate ran into the bedroom and slammed the door. I raced to the front door to go outside. My other roommate stood frozen in the middle of the living room and screamed and screamed and screamed. I still remember that because she was wearing a flannel nightgown and she held it above her knees and screamed so loud and for so long. I still laugh when i think of that. (:
LOL! I think the first scary movies that I remember watching were Carrie, Salem's Lot, the Friday the 13th's, and the Halloween movies. One of my favorites...Pet Cemetery.

Later the guys had to go out and put up the horses and tack and neither wanted to go out to the barn because of the trees in the pasture across from our house. I still tease hubby about that.

I got a couple of the movies mixed up == Don't Be Afraid of the Dark with Kim Darby was a TV movie about the gremlins who drag her down the fireplace. I also saw one that I can't remember the title of where the girl was blind, and her entire family had been murdered and was in various rooms of the house, while she continued to live in it, and she was being stalked. A really tense scene in the stables was terrifying!! Wish I could remember the title!! And who could forget "Bad Ronald"??

Chelle, I think you're right about watching the movies when you're younger and them not bothering you. But when you're older and you see that the world is a scary place, even scarier than most horror movies, it does make you look at things differently.
ReplyDeleteNow, regarding The Blair Witch Project. I remember when it was about to come out and I was so excited because I'd seen a show on the Sci-Fi channel about the making of it. That show was so good and I couldn't wait to see the movie. After I saw it, I decided that the show on the making of the movie was so much better than the movie! I actually wanted to stop that movie in the middle and wash everyone's mouth out with soap. The language was horrible and I'm not that easily offended. I ended up not really caring what happened to them. LOL That's just wrong!

ReplyDeleteSalem's Lot scared the bejesus out of me. I was convinced a vampire was going to come in my dorm window and have his undead way with me. I was on the eleventh floor! And when I was a kid, I was afraid of the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz. Giant-sized wus here.
ReplyDeleteI used to love scary movies, the scarier the better. But, man, anymore I can hardly watch them. I always loved Freddy Krueger, but only with Robert Englund - refused to watch the remake. I guess the closest I come to watching that kind of movie anymore is more along the lines of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez films. I do LOVE Halloween, though!!
ReplyDeleteI gotta agree on the Blair Witch Project being on the 'not so great' scary movie list. My son picked an 'intensely, scary' movie for us to watch together that reminded me a lot of BWP. It's called Paranormal Activity. I think I grounded him for a week for wasting two hours of my life I can never get back. LOL I thought it was awful. Of course, five minutes after it was (blessedly) over, he scared me to DEATH using something from the movie.

Some that make my fave list:
Silver Bullet, Psycho w/ Anthony Perkins, The Fog--starring Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis and her mom Janet Leigh,---Halloween 1 & 2, Carrie w/ Sissy Spacek, and the original Christine, I love any Abbott & Costello flick! ---and I especially like; although more suspense than horror, Hitchcock's Rear Window w/ Jimmy Stewart----and one horror movie that still gets to me---it's based on a true story; The Town That Dreaded Sundown.
A friend recommended Shelly Laurenston---I read her book Here Kitty, Kitty---too funny! LOL
I read Shannon K Butcher's Running Scared; her third book in the Sentinel Wars series. It is a really good series! (I actually began the series at the beginning and not in the middle! LOL)
How could I forget When A Stranger Calls w/Carol Kane and Charles Durning??? And Scream. Both were really good movies!

He fell asleep and woke up at the scene when the girl crawls out of the television set. He now swears (even though he only saw like ten minutes of the movie) that it's the scariest movie he's ever seen!

I was little and every Saturday night a midnight the local TV station would do Shock Theatre and show scary movies. I remember crawling into the bed with my sister and hiding under the covers.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was a little girl, Dark Shadows was on television and I was convinced Barnabas Collins was going to bite me some day. So, no matter what the temp was (remember this was in Alabama and we had no air conditioning), I always made sure my neck was covered. LOL, as if a sheet was going to stop him. I'm just glad I didn't have access to garlic at the time!
Kelijo23, when I was younger, I enjoyed them so much more than I do now. But part of that I have to blame on the gore. It seems that unless it's super bloody and gross, Hollywood doesn't think it's scary. I think that's one of the reasons The Haunting can still scare me. It left so much to the imagination and when you're imagining the worst, it's so much scarier!

I am CRACKING up remembering The Ring. Hubby got it, and I'm not sure the opening credits were over before the tv was off and the movie had been banned for life from our house! Whatever he saw, scared him to death. LOL
ReplyDeleteAs for your question, he walked down the hall (it was after midnight). Every light in the house was off (did I mention it was after midnight). Suddenly, he flips open his phone and begins 'narrating' a suspenseful scene from his imagination. All I could see of his face was what his phone light allowed. It looked just like the lighting from PA. I screamed but luckily didn't wake up any sleeping family members. LOL Others might tell you to absolutely get the movie. I just have no need to watch the same scenes twice (they video while they're asleep, then watch it the next day). And really, how many times in a movie do I have to watch someone brush her teeth? Just didn't do it for me.
Oh Christy!! Bad Ronald was about a psycho teen boy who lived in the wall and terrorized the family who moved into the house -- starred Scott Jacoby I believe. Very creepy!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in high school I liked to go see scary movies with my friends. We would sit in the theatre and scream at the scary parts. Our favorites were the Friday 13th ones. I've never been into scary books unless you count some of the romantic suspense books I read.(Like yours)
ReplyDeleteOur favorite fall activity is going pumpkin picking and having hot apple cidar or hot chocholate.

LOL, Kara, guys seem to think stuff like that is funny. It's usually after the ear splitting scream they realize that was probably not a good idea.

ReplyDeleteMy favorites are "The Exorcist" and the cheesy Friday the 13th movies. The scariest movie I ever saw was "Hellraiser." I used to have nightmares about Pinhead.

Hey Jane, The Exorcist is without a doubt the one movie I just cannot watch again. I saw it once and...well, oh my, I just can't watch it again. Yes, it scared me. (:

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the Evil Dead movies too. That was Bruce Campbell, right? Had some good humor in them. Wasn't there one where he was alone in a cabin in the woods and got his hand cut off and he and his hand got into a fight? LOL, or did I dream that?

The bank robbery sequence is very gory, so if that is bothersome you may want to fast-forward there. And there is another scene with gore later in the movie but it's easily identifiable and you can FF there too. But it's a great scare, and - it's filmed in Alabama! How cool is that?
