Hope you're having a nice, relaxing Sunday and you're staying warm and dry.
Thanks for the great discussion yesterday. Interesting to see the many varied comments and recommendations. My TBR list has grown considerably since I started this contest. Guess I'd better start being nicer, so Santa will bring me some bookstore gift cards.
Since we talked about tearjerkers yesterday, I thought it'd be fun to discuss the opposite:
WHAT ROMANCE BOOKS HAVE MADE YOU LAUGH OUT LOUD?
I don't read a lot of romantic comedy. I've read some and have enjoyed them, but I'm usually looking for that emotional tug on my heartstrings when I'm wanting a good read. However, I have read a few romances, not necessarily romantic comedy, that I've chuckled or had to stop and give a good old belly laugh. (Belly laugh might be a Southernism, not sure).
Here are the ones I can remember laughing out loud while reading:
Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series--so funny I've been almost hysterical with laughter
The Bride by Julie Garwood
The Secret by July Garwood
Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught--this was one I mentioned yesterday that made me cry, but there are several humorous moments. One that comes to mind is the sewing scene. Takes amazing talent to be able to stir so many emotions in one book. Judith McNaught is a master of this.
It Had To Be You by Susan Elizabeth Phillips--The scene at her father's funeral with her dog is hilarious. SEP is another author who has the phenomenal talent of making you laugh one moment and tear up the next.
Again, one comment, per person, per day and you'll be eligible for Tuesday's grand prize drawing.
No limit on the list. Let's just talk funny! What are yours?
Pretty much anything by Jennifer Cruise...She writes with a lot of humor.
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon everyone,
ReplyDeleteLet me just say that i will be sad when this is over. I am having so much fun talking with all of you.
Got to go to work so this will be short.
1. MaryJanice Davidson's Queen Betsy Series All of them. I usually read most of them out loud when its just me and my daughter( who is 20) and we laugh so hard.
2. Charlaine Harris's Harper Conley series( I know i have a sick mind)
3. MaryJanice davidson's Hello Gorgeous
4. Janet Evanovich's Plum Lovin'
All for now got to run! will think and be back later. LOL
A little Less Talk and Alot More Action by Luanne Maclane.
ReplyDeleteJudith McNaught
SEP Especially the one with the beaver suit.
I am showing my age today. Hopefully I will remember and come back and tell you the titles.
I love to read a book that makes me laugh! Of course that means I have a long list. Favorites would have to be:
ReplyDeleteChristie Craig - I haven't read her newest book yet (it's waiting for me on my table), but everything she writes is soo funny.
Janet Evanovich, especially the earlier Stephaine Plum books
SEP, of course (and I definitely agree about the scene at the funeral with the dog!)
Kristan Higgans - Recently read Too Good To Be True - very funny
Suzanne Brockmann - While her books are not comedies, the banter between certain characters is always worthy of a belly laugh! Southernism or not, it's true! lol
BTW, my older son went on a *gulp* date last night and my younger one had a new video game. I pulled out Sweet Baby and read it. Good grief, did I ever cry - TWICE!
Sara, you're right. And Cruise is so witty and real with her characters.
ReplyDeleteIda, heard some great things about Mary Janice Davidson's books. Will have to add them to my list!
ReplyDeleteJackie, which one of SEPs had the beaver suit? Was it This Heart of Mine?
ReplyDeleteKara, I'm so glad you enjoyed Sweet Baby...or at least I think you enjoyed it. And maybe you were feeling a bit emotional because of your son dating.
ReplyDeleteI need to find my copy and give it another read.
Great list of humorous authors too!
Janet Evanovich's Plum series
ReplyDeleteKristan Higgans - Too Good to be True
SEP - It Had to be You
I'm going to say Mr Perfect again by Linda Howard. A friend suggested it to me and i had never read any of Linda's books but i tried it and i laughed out loud so many times. Loved it.
ReplyDeleteAlot of Susan Mallery's books make me laugh.
Just Breath by Susan Wiggs had it's moments.
The Bride by Julie Garwood was good also My Gentle Warrior and Rebellious Desire both by Julie Garwood.
I'm loving all your questions Cristy!
Sarah i have several Jennifer Cruise books on my TBR pile but i have not actually read any of her books yet. Good to know she writes with humor. I'll have to get started on one of her books soon.
ReplyDeleteLisa
"Natural Born Charmer" starring dreamy football star Dean Robillard met up with "The Beaver" Blue Bailey on a lonely Colorado road . . . and hilarity too shape. One of my all-time favorites! Another of SEP's that had me in stitches was "Lady Be Good" with Kenny and Lady Emma.
ReplyDeleteMost of Rachel Gibson's books are funny. The two that I've enjoyed the most are "See Jane Score" and "True Confessions."
Also, a really feel-good laugh out loud book by Susan Donovan is "He Loves Lucy." I closed this book with a big smile on my face.
As mentioned by Kara C., Christie Craig is a new author who brings lots of fun and laughter to her books. I also have her latest in my TBR stack.
Christy,
ReplyDeleteLoved Sweet Baby. I think the emotion came from working with kids with similar horrible life stories. The dating thing I'm choosing to stay in denial about for now. lol
Oh, Sandra Hill and Lori Wilde are two more authors that can make me laugh!
Kate Angell has some pretty good laughs in her "Baseball" series.
ReplyDeleteAnd Diedre Martin's sports series usually give you some fun and laughter.
Another is Jane Blackwood's "Sexiest Dead Man Alive". She has a couple others that I've enjoyed, as well, but just can't recall the titles at present.
Great list Lulu. And I've heard good things about Kristan Higgan's books too!
ReplyDeleteModokker, how could I forget about Mr. Perfect! Janie and Sam were wonderful together. The kitchen window scene was a definite laughter moment, along with so many others. Linda Howard has a such a talent for witty and easy banter between her characters.
ReplyDeleteOklanannie, great list!
ReplyDeleteI've met Christie Craig several times and not only is she funny in her books, she's wonderful in person. And such an inspiration to other writers!
How could I forget the debut book by new author Louisa Edwards?
ReplyDelete"Can't Stand the Heat" - wow! so much sizzling fun and lots of laughs as well.
She also has a free-read story on her web page that is delightful.
Good One Christy!
ReplyDeleteJulie James. Mock Courtroom scene in Just The Sexiest Man Alive where she puts him on trial for not making their meetings. Best scene EVER. Julie is the only author I emailed before I finished the book to tell her how much I was enjoying the book. I also told her that I was not allowed to read her books in public anymore because they are LOL funny.
Jill Shalvis
SEP
Deirdre Martin
Kate Angell
Rachel Gibson
Can you tell I'm an ex-tomboy with the sports thing?
Christie Craig
Luann Mclane:
A shower scene in He's No Prince Charming is amazing & it's not even the H & H.
Sherrilyn Kenyon writes some of the best one liners in her books. They are not romantic comedies but she sure does make me laugh. JRW is pretty funny too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Oklanannie, for SEP book. I forgot Suzanne Brockmann's Flashpoint that was a fun book. We should start a You should read this list somehow and all of us could list books we read that we liked.
ReplyDeleteOklanannie,
ReplyDeleteI LOVED He Loves Lucy. In fact, I reread it last week! And Louisa Edwards? What a great book. I think the next one comes out in the Spring.
Sounds like we read a lot of the same books. (:
I don't read a lot of comedy either but I love it when the relationship between characters make me laugh. I have to say just about all of Suzanne Brockmanns books make ma laugh out loud. Like Breaking point, Flashpoint, Gone to Far (you name it)
ReplyDeletealso Cover of Night by Linda Howard the twin boys have a scene where they are jumping on the bed making their goobies shake. I Laugh everytime! Also Iris Johanson has a few like No one to trust. That book isn't suppose to be funny, but Sean Galen makes me laugh.
Whenever I want a good laugh, I always read any of the shifter books by Shelly Laurenston.
ReplyDeleteChristy, MJD is a must read. so funny!
ReplyDeleteAlso while i was working i thought of a few more.
Traveler by Melanie Jackson
Internal Affairs by Jessica Andersen
Dark lover by Brenda Joyce
A Man In A Kilt by Sandy Blair (parts of it )
And alot of Sherrilyn Kenyons Dark Hunter seires Books. Every time Simi is in a book I can not help laughing.
Great lists everyone! I haven't read many of the ones recommended but will definitely put them on my list. My mom is an avid reader. Reads about 15 to 20 a week, so I'll definitely be sharing these lists with her. She'll love them too!
ReplyDeleteKeep'em coming if you got them!
Suzanne Brockmann and SEP are both great in incorporating humor in their stories. In Dark of Night, I loved the interaction between Decker and Tracy. The dialogue between them was snappy, sharp and witty. I had many laugh out loud moments.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Rachel Gibson books are pretty funny.
And, I also loved Julia London's Material Girl and Beauty Queen (part of the Lear Family Trilogy).
ok everyone help me out here. What are the SEP books? I think I'm missing something.
ReplyDeleteSusan Andersen, Elaine Fox and Rachel Gibson always make me laugh.
ReplyDeleteHi cmac, SEP is Susan Elizabeth Phillips.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the group on Rachel Gibson - I love her hockey books. Another author that makes me chuckle is Julie James. I really liked her recent book, Practice Makes Perfect, with the "bickering" lawyers
ReplyDeleteChristy,
ReplyDeleteThis has been so much fun, but how will I ever read all of these great books? lol My TBR pile grows everytime I check back in here.
Can't believe I left off Lori Foster! Her Visitation series (Say No to Joe, Just a Hint Clint, etc) had lots of humor in them.
Have a great night. Time to buckle down and do some paperwork. One more week until Christmas break! :)
Fabulous recommendations, everyone. Thanks so much for sharing! Feel free to continue the discussion. I'm going off line till tomorrow. Gotta get some reading done if I'm ever going to be able to get started on this gigantic new list of mine.
ReplyDeleteTomorrow, we'll discuss something a bit different, so be sure to put your thinking caps on!
Have a wonderful evening!
Oh definitely SEP! Lady Be Good was hilarious so was Natural Born Charmer. Rachel Gibson's Not Another Bad Date. Erin McCarthy's Heiress For Hire and Houston, We Have a Problem. Divorced, Desperate and Delicious by Christie Craig.
ReplyDeletei hope i'm not too late :)
ReplyDeletei don't know many of romantic comedy authors, the one that i know is : Christie Craig :)
Oh No I forgot Erin McCarthy & Lori Foster. You're mom is seriuosly cool if she reads these. My mom (mother of 4) still blushes.
ReplyDeleteHey Erin, great to see you here! And thanks for adding to our growing list!
ReplyDeleteMariska, not too late.
ReplyDeleteChristie Craig seems to be a favorite for lots of people. And she's so wonderfully witty in person too!
